Adventures in Shelving - Part 02

Okay. School's out. Summer's here. We get it, kids. Stop unshelving every single book on dinosaurs and dropping them in the picture books section. Don't rub your faces into those puppets unless you want pink eye. Please don't reshelve Clifford the Big Red Dog books where Eric Carle books should go. Please don't reshelve period.

During this year's summer reading program, I've found a new way to humor myself and thus not go completely insane. When choosing picture and easy reader books to display, I go by certain criteria...

1) Interesting title/cover art
2) Theme
3) Subjects that "don't belong."

Example 1: I love Leo Lionni picture books because of the construction paper-like quality to his work. Good cover art, I display it.
Example 2: Sometimes I'll display more popular books, or all the ones on my cart about cats, or going to the beach, or spaghetti parties. Themes.
Example 3: Displaying books that don't belong is my personal favorite. It's usually by coincidence, but every so often I'll put up books about Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, or other holidays that have nothing to do with summer. Last week I put up some books about school. It's educational. Summer won't last forever. I'm displaying valuable lessons in perspective. For the kids as much as for myself.

It's all in good fun. Sometimes the weird books even get checked out. You never know what kids want to read...
